GIRARD — Forget Black Friday. Girard High School football fans are hoping for a (Red and) Black Saturday as the Indians play Licking Valley in the Division IV state semifinal.
Supporters lined North State Street Friday between Wilson Avenue and Interstate 80 to cheer on the caravan of buses — with a police and fire escort — that transported the team in advance of the game at 7 p.m. today at Crater Stadium in Dover.
Christina Marquez said the idea for the sendoff came about on social media earlier this week and organizers contacted Mayor James Melfi to get approval.
“The band director is out of town, so the (Girard High School) band couldn’t be here,” Marquez said. “But they definitely will be here next week WHEN we win. I love to see this, the community coming together to support this team. They deserve it.”
Carol Fackelman of Girard was there with her grandchildren — Kendall and Joey Yankey, ages 9 and 4 — who were holding up a sign that said “Good Luck.”
